You probably used: http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/mini.iso
Instead of: http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/non-pae/mini.iso
The mini/netboot images exist in both PAE and non-PAE variants for
12.04. As of 12.10 we don't build the non-pae ones anymore.
** Changed in: debian-installer (Ubuntu)
Status: New => Invalid

Title:
Mini iso installation wants pae
Status in “debian-installer” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
Tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 on a Dell D800 laptop using the mini
iso. After selected "Install" from installer boot menu installation
failed with error message "This kernel rquires the following features
not present on the CPU: pae". Tried twice with two different copies of
the mini iso downloaded 6 weeks apart. Both copies had correct
md5sums. The mini iso is widely reported to be suitable for non pae
machines because it uses a non-pae kernel. Is this false?
