Title:
Update Manager fails leaving system broken

Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: update-manager

Used Update Manager to upgrade from Koala to Lynx.
Packages downloaded successfully, upgrade started; reported that it would take one day to complete.
1/10th of the way in, Update Manager presented error dialog saying Python was already installed, clicked to continue upgrade.
Same error happened again, a few hours later.
Much later, Upgrade Manager reports that there have been too many errors, is trying to recover, system may be unstable.
  Upgrade Manager ends after 'recovery'.
Run Update Manager again, it fails, reporting Upgrading from Koala to Lynx is not supported. (!)
Reboot the system, X appears to fail to start. Reboot process hangs on Battery Check.
Can however, ssh -X into the box, X is in fact working. System reports that it is Ubuntu Lucid Lynx.
Ran synaptic in an X session to repair broken packages; success.
Ran Update Manager in an X session: 410 packages to upgrade; success.
Reboot the system. Success, New Lynx X login, but Nvidia drivers need to be reset.
