I tried several different things:
Install 11.1 from CD, crashed at the same point.
Rebooted and selected try 11.10, Then did install from desktop icon. That worked!
Did all upgerades for 11.04.
Re bootedsystem several times to make sure it was stable, seemed OK.
Currently upgrading to 12.04, So far OK.
System: IBM ThinkPad A31 1G ram, 32G KingSpec PATA SSD.
System used to run Dev Ubuntu, to help with bug fixes.
