Same problem for me on my desktop.
The weird thing is I don't have the problem on my laptop!

What can be the difference?

Title:
  gvim freezes when started from a terminal

Status in “vim” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  After upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10 I can no longer start gvim (from
  vim-gnome) from a terminal. It freezes and I have to xkill / force
  close it. I get the following message printed to the terminal window:

     The application 'gvim' lost its connection to the display :0.0;
     most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed
     the application.

  This makes sense, because I did kill/destroy the application.

  If I start gvim from the unity lense it works as expected.
