  error processing xterm

Status in “dpkg” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: dpkg

  Hi, my school is  using Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy)and for many reasons we
  cant upgrade to higher version at least for this quarter.

  when I try to install anything with apt-get, or even use "aptitude -f
  remove xterm"

  the following error occurs:

  
  Setting up xterm (229-1ubuntu1.1) ...
  update-alternatives: internal error: /var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/x-terminal-emulator corrupt: invalid update mode
  dpkg: error processing xterm (--configure):
   subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2
