Thanks - bug 919356 is indeed closer to the mark.  I'm going to mark
this as a duplicate (although I know this one was filed first) and deal
with it there.

Bug description:
  Trying to do a clean install of Ubuntu 11.10 on a Mac G4 PPC, boots
  fine from live disc image burnt to DVD, installer fails when it cannot
  locate the correct mirror, have tried installing with Internet
  disconnected, but same error regardless.
