caused repeating crash:

so now the issue isn't that the greeter isn't working but lightdm still
allows functionality-- it is just plain broken.

removing unity-greeter did not improve the situation.

installing unity-greeter=0.2.0-0ubuntu4 doesn't prove successful because it can't find it though it is apparently in packages:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/unity-greeter
