First, attaching the old /etc/network/interfaces might help clarify
things

Did you configure the network before installation?
I'd be curious about the initial network state (ifconfig >log.txt; iwconfig >>log.txt 2>&1)--does d-i configure /etc/network/interfaces based on the the devices that are up, or the current network connection?

Possible preinstall configurations that might make a difference:
1. Default (whatever that is) -already tested?
2. All devices up, but unconfigured (in a shell run ifconfig eth0 up; ifconfig wlan0 up)
3. All devices down
4. Internet connection established (ideally, 1 test each with wlan0 & eth0)

Finally, two symptoms of a conflict ->one bug, possibly affecting
multiple packages.

The topic should probably be "Networking doesn't work after alternate
install in Ubuntu 12.04 amd64"

Title:
Atheros wireless doesn't work in Ubuntu 12.04 alpha 1

Status in “debian-installer” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  lspci reports
07:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications AR8131 Gigabit Ethernet (rev c0)
This device works fine in Ubuntu 11.10 32 bit, but doesn't see any networks in Ubuntu 12.04 alpha 1 64 bit,
before or after doing a full update.
The system is an Asus G60JX laptop ( see http://kegel.com/linux/asus-g60jx-laptop.html ).

(Wired networking is also somewhat broken, see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/917399
or I would have reported this using apport on the affected system.)
