For any future people affected by this bug, I've added a possible
workaround to the PowerPC Known Issues page
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCKnownIssues .  There is also included
what I think is the cause (in the choose-mirror package), but this needs
testing or somebody with more knowledge than me looking at it!

Bug description:
  Trying to do a clean install of Ubuntu 11.10 on a Mac G4 PPC, boots
  fine from live disc image burnt to DVD, installer fails when it cannot
  locate the correct mirror, have tried installing with Internet
  disconnected, but same error regardless.
