Title:
removing splash option from grub boot options leaves black screen with
  just the mouse cursor

Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: grub2

In order to receive more debug info regarding my system I removed "quiet splash" from /etc/default/grub GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT and did an sudo update-grub . After rebooting my system just showed a black screen with the mouse cursor instead of the login screen. drum sound is played as well. I can move the mouse cursor but not (alt+f1/f2-)switch to a console.
I have to hard reset manually adding "splash" to the grub boot options afterwards in order to boot to the graphical login...
