[Bug 912667] Re: USB media fails to boot on netbook.

I can't tell if the problem is in the initrd, or in syslinux...

I was able to boot from my ONLY hard drive...
it came up as 0x81

So there is a problem with the dell laptop doing something not standard
by reporting 0x80 as the device it boots from, regardless of if it is
removable or not.

Our initrd, or syslinux whatever should detect what device was used to
boot from, and pass the parameters to the initrd.

Title:
USB media fails to boot on netbook.

Status in “usb-creator” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
the kubuntu 11.10 desktop 32bit iso put onto a usb stick using
startdisk-creator in 11.10 does not work on my netbook, a dell mini 9.

after the splash screen, it dumps me into a busybox shell. Linux
Mint 12 also does this at least when created from usb-creator in
11.10. (and I think unetebootin has the same problem but need to
  confirm)

I have now tried creating a usb drive with and without the stored
reserved extra space, and they both do not work.

from within the initramfs (busybox) I found the casper.log file, and
  here is the first line:

  /bin/casper-preseed: .: line 13: can't open '/root/usr/share/debconf/confmodule'
all of the rest of the errors have something to do with not being able to open '/root...

I see now that I need to read syslinux info, I had thought the system was using grub2.

I can also see the boot options by pressing F6, then exiting the little menu that comes up.
  noprompt cdrom-detect/try-usb=true file=/cdrom/preseed/kubuntu.seed boot=casper maybe-ubiquity initrd=/casper/initrd.lz quiet splash --

  Knoppix 4.7.1 works fine.
11.04 alternate install boots just  fine from usb. (believe it was created on 10.10)

This Kubuntu usb stick media works on 2 other computers with sata
  drives.

Could it be something to do with the half mini pciExpress ssd not being detected as a hard drive properly?
