This is fixed now:

and was likely because the upgrade happened before the final release of
10.04 was available.

Binary package hint: update-manager
ran update-manager -d from karmic or hardy 8.04.4, expected dialogue
to display "10.04"
the first, main window dialogue of update-manager correctly reports
10.04 is available, it is in the following dialogue for the upgrade
process that it reports the old version
