If you install the latest version of aptdaemon using the command 'sudo
apt-get install aptdaemon' update-manager will start working again.

Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Update manager freezes when trying to do updates. And then whole
  system locks up, and have to do hard reboot. Doing sudo apt-get
  upgrade however, works fine.
