Thanks for the report.
Couldn't find package failure in term.log.
There was just another process running, maybe there was softwar-center, synaptic or else running at the same time.
See last lines from term.log
dpkg: error: dpkg status database is locked by another process
Log ended: 2012-01-05 11:07:01
Please close all running package management GUIs and upgrade only via terminal.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get upgrade

I went to update this morning and got a package failure on precise.
I'm hoping by ubuntu buging this all the info you need will be
