Title:
dist-upgrade disk full warning
Status in “apt” package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
Ubuntu 11.10
apt:
Installed: 0.8.16~exp5ubuntu13
Candidate: 0.8.16~exp5ubuntu13
Version table:
*** 0.8.16~exp5ubuntu13 0
500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
I just ran apt-get dist-upgrade, and as a result of which my root partition became full. There was no warning of this from apt, and the next time I booted X couldn't start as there was no room to write a file it needed to disk. If I wasn't a technical user I wouldn't have been able to diagnose or fix them problem.
Given the severity of the problems that can be caused by filling your
root partition, apt should warn you or even prevent you from
installing packages when you're about to do so, especially when
performing a seemingly innocuous task like installing package updates.
