Thank you, indeed keyboard input comes back when I press ctrl+alt+f1 and
then ctrl+alt+f7. I also scanned the key code:

First, note that  /lib/udev/findkeyboards does not yield any keyboard in
my case, but I could figure out that my keyboard is at
/dev/input/event4.  Scanning the key using keymap -i input/event4 gives
me:

scan code: 0x8C, key code: f23

Status in “udev” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  I have a Dell XPS M1330. On this computer, the Fn+right arrow key
  combination should change the keyboard backlight. Pressing the key
  combination, however, leads to complete loss of keyboard input to any
  program. Keyboard input can only be restored by rebooting my computer.
