I just did an oem install with 12.04 and I had a nice GUI the entire way
through. Does anyone know if this was an issue when Ryan filed the bug
that was fixed? I am still combing through bzr commits and other bug
reports to try and figure this whole thing out. Thanks!

Title:
Black screen with 'X' cursor during install

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
   affects ubuntu/ubiquity

  ubiquity-frontend-kde version 1.99.6

During the system install / disk partitioning / intallation complete part of the
OEM install, the user has a black background with an old-style 'X' cursor.

It may be that OEM installers don't need anything flashy, but it would still be
nice to at least maintain the same cursor (KDE (oxygen I believe) mouse arrow)
during those steps. Having a nice background instead of a black screen would be
  a plus.
