Title:
[ubuntu lucid] Desktop unusable after upgrade from karmic

Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Today (after release of beta1) I upgraded my netbook (Acer Aspire One
110L) from Karmic to Lucid. Upgrade went smoothly, and after reboot I
was offered the login screen. Login was successful, the ubuntu jingle
sounded, but then the desktop showed nothing but the empty desktop
background. After more reboots and killed Xorg servers, I got at least
a desktop, but it is mirrored and flipped! The mouse behaves as usual,
and I can move the mouse pointer over any icon, but they do not
respond to a mouse click. (Apparently the sensitive area for a mouse
response is elsewhere on the screen).

When I login via the Gnome-failsafe option, everything on the screen
  is where it belongs.

See attached screenshots for logins under Gnome and Gnome-Failsafe
