Have you checked if this problem is still present in Ubuntu 11.10 or

Title:
UEFI boot needs Experimental branch of Grub

Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: grub2

As discussed here, when booting with grub-efi-amd64, the system fails
  to find the initramfs image:

  http://www.mail-archive.com/bug-grub@gnu.org/msg12623.html

It looks like the "experimental" branch of Grub makes this booting
work, at least to where it sees the initramfs image. Unfortunately,
since I had to install (mkimage) Grub manually, it broke in other ways
that don't happen with the packaged Grub.

Note that my system is an HP EliteBook 8530w.

  Also relevant:
  https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/foundations-m-uefi-
  support

More specifically, I've heard that what I may need is the "newreloc"
  work.
