This is happening to me too and I just upgraded to Precise Pangolin from
Oneiric. In my Oneiric everything worked fine but now this bug appeared.

I am running on AMD64

Title:
dash application search buggy when dash started with ALT-F2

Status in “dash” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I'm searching for "kwrite". Results are "kwrite" and "kwriteconfig"
when I have entered "kwrit", ie. omitted the "e" at the end. When
entering "kwrite", the result is only "kwriteconfig" and hitting ENTER
  does not start kwrite.

Behaves correctly when starting dash by clicking the dash icon on the
  launcher bar.
