 same problem occurred when running install directly from initial
prompt. Install DVD/USB allows direct install or run "liveDVD" which has
option to install Ubuntu 11.10

 My first reaction is that there should have been a delay in the process
to allow the umounts ( sys, proc, dev) to complete before attempting to
umount /target

 Failing at this point with no recovery means that previous instances of
grub exist that point to drive instances/UUID that no longer map to
drives and/or partitions
