Title:
Produces broken image when udev is not installed
Status in “initramfs-tools” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
The following procedure casuses mkinitramfs to produce unusable
initramfs mage:
1. Clean installation of ubuntu-server from dapper-flight-6 CD
2. installation of metapackage ubuntu-desktop or kubuntu-desktop using dselect. (Just pressing + on the corresponding metapackage and agreeing on everything else)
The reason is dselect uninstalls udev, mdadm and lvm for some strange reason nad mkinitramfs cannot recover from missing /sbin/mdadm, /sbin/vgsave, /sbin/lvm (or so) and produces an image unable to mount root.
(ext2 on /dev/hda2 in my case)
xubuntu-desktop do not exhibit thes flaw, since the installation of it
leaves udev and etc. untouched.
Returning back the above mentioned packages and running dpkg-
reconfigure on the kernel package fixes the problem. Need to be done
from rescue CD.
