[Bug 322331] Re: Hard disk clicks and increasing Load_Retry_Count

Q 322331 at bugs.launchpad.net
Sun Feb 5 19:13:04 UTC 2012

Had the same problem and disk model, tried -S0 (didn't help), then -B255
:

Load_Retry_Count has indeed slowed down (~twice in 30 minutes), but then
Load_Cycle_Count started growing ;

I have returned the values to -B254, and, weird enough, now they grow
both, though slowly again .

Title:
Hard disk clicks and increasing Load_Retry_Count

Status in “acpi-support” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: acpi-support

My hard disk (a Samsung HM160HC) emits a loud (and fairly scary) click
every couple of minutes or so. Sometimes this is accompanied by a
louder (and scarier) beeping noise. Every time it emits a click, the
Load_Retry_Count is increased by one. (The Load_Cycle_Count, on the
other hand, is hardly increased at all, remaining constant for tens of
  minutes, at least.)

This did not happen under any previous version of Ubuntu. I am
currently running intrepid (updated from feisty via gutsy and hardy, I
  believe).

I am not sure if I am filing this against the correct package, but it
seems similar enough to #59695 to suspect that these bugs might be
  related.
