Why is this still even an issue?

After some searching through the bugs here I went back on to the web and
did some searches. It seems this problem has been around since at least
Ubuntu 10.04. Or earlier?

The problem seems to be the file; 40cdrom

The solution; sudo rm /usr/lib/ubiquity/apt-setup/generators/40cdrom

This can be done in Terminal from the trial Ubuntu running from the USB
drive. Then just click on the instal icon.

Sure worked for me.

Maybe I just don't know how to do a proper search hear but it sure
didn't take me long to find some suggested links with a Google search.
And now that I know this solution, Googling "sudo rm /usr/lib/ubiquity
/apt-setup/generators/40cdrom" comes up with four pages of links.

Ubuntu claims to be so user friendly. Well, something so basic as an
inability to install it argues to the contrary. Frustrating new an
future users does not bode well. This needs to be fixed immediately in
the installer and for those already struggling with the problem a fix
should be widely noted and easily available.

I'm not the most tech savy but I have been using Ubuntu since at least
08.04, maybe earlier. There have been problems along the way and some
rather perplexing but for the most part I've enjoyed the ride. Ubuntu
has continued to improve but for me the advent of Unity has not been
good. And a problem this basic shakes my confidence further.

I've been trying to function under Unity but in 11.04 I must confess I
usually booted into the classic desktop. Now minus that opption, well,
I'm trying harder but it's still just not working for me.

I'd like to stay with Ubuntu so I guess next I'll be trying an install
of another desktop.

Sorry, got a little off topic there.

Title:
[oneiric] Can't install Ubuntu from USB drive

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I created a Ubuntu 11.10 USB drive on Windows using the instructions
on the Ubuntu download page. Didn't format the key, but I don't think
that's in any way relevant. I did "safely remove" the key after I was
  done.

Everything goes fine until the second half of the installation
process. Ubiquity errors out with "An attempt to configure apt to
install additional packages from the CD failed." - if I close the
dialog box, Ubiquity quits and reports the installation as successful,
but I get a GRUB "Hard Disk Error" when trying to boot.

I've tried both from a live Unity session with my wireless driver
installed and from the Ubiquity-only session, same result. My setup
involves custom partitioning, since I use a separate partition for
/home. Yes, I did make sure my old user folder didn't stand in the
way. I did not try to install the "restricted extras" (drivers,
codecs, Flash) when prompted by Ubiquity, just the updates, and just
when I tried installing from the live Unity session.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Download the Ubuntu ISO - I downloaded it from the torrent version, so it's probably not a bad copy. (Since the torrent protocol makes sure all data gets hash-checked et al.)
  2. Use the instructions on the official download page to make a USB drive from Windows.
  3. Pick either the "live" or the "installer" session, same result.
  4. Run Ubiquity, go with the installation as normal.
  5. Near the end of the installation, it will error out.
I have been able to reproduce this twice - the third time, Ubiquity semi-crashed during the keyboard layout stage (UI freeze), so I gave up on trying.
I'll just go find a CD and install through that. I'm downright SICK of Ubuntu giving some apt-related crash every single time I try to install it.

I'm on an HP ProBook 4510s, the Intel graphics and Broadcom wireless
model. I'm using a SanDisk Cruzer Micro 4GB flash drive, which I
imaged Ubuntu to using the latest version of Universal USB Installer,
  on Windows Vista.
