Since this is both ancient and was fixed by the user correcting an
invalid filesystem, I'm going to go ahead and close this. If there is a
way to reproduce it, please reopen and describe how.

Title:
ubiquity crashes after searching for partitions with error message
"??? ???"
Status in “parted” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
Binary package hint: ubiquity
System: Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron Live CD
Package: Ubiquity / Partman
Hello,
unfortunately it is not possible for me to come through the installation process of Ubuntu 8.04. After specifying the keyboard-layout the partitioner crashes with the obscure error message "??? ???".
Analyzing the partman code, the error is generated in /lib/partman/lib/base.sh line 437 since the exception type is unknown. After the error message there are still partman processes running:
log-output -t ubiquity --pass-stdout /bin/partman
/bin/sh /lib/partman/display.d/10initial_auto
/bin/sh /lib/partman/display.d/10initial_auto
/bin/sh /lib/partman/automatically_partition/50biggest_free/choices
I had also the same problem when trying to install Ubuntu Gutsy
Gibbon. I could only install it with an upgrade from feisty. It seems
to be a problem with my hard-drive in combination with partman. When I
replaced my hard-drive no problems occur. Is there a workaround to
skip the partitioning step? This is not a special issue of the live
cd, the problem occurs on the text-mode-installer as well.
Following, my partition-setup (fdisk -l):
Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xd53d826f
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 1186 9526513+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda2 1187 3840 21318255 83 Linux
/dev/sda4 3841 9729 47303392+ f W95 Ext'd (LBA)

/dev/sda6 9245 9729 3895731 7 HPFS/NTFS
Thanks in advance for answering,
kind regards,
