Can you reproduce this with just the parted command?

Title:
  parted hangs during installation on SSD

Status in “parted” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: parted

  1)
  root at ubuntu:~# lsb_release -rd
  Description:	Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
  Release:	10.04

  The same happens with 10.10rc of 1 Oct 2010

  2)
  root at ubuntu:~# apt-cache policy parted
  parted:
    Installed: 2.2-5ubuntu5
    Candidate: 2.2-5ubuntu5
    Version table:
   *** 2.2-5ubuntu5 0
          500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages
          100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

  3) expected to be able to use a 64GB Verbatim ExpressCard/34 SSD for
  Ubuntu

  4) Ubuntu Live sees the SSD OK as /dev/sdc (see below),
      But "Install Ubultu 10.04LTS" hangs during the partition stage (syslog and partman logs attached).
      The automatic error reporting system fails as well saying "the error happened in assertion".
      The latest OpenSUSE and Mandriva behave exactly the same, although Mandriva says
      "A bug has been detected in GNU Parted.
       Email to ... containing
       version 2.2
       assertion (head_size<=63) at dos.c:659
       in function probe_partition_for_geom() failed."
       I reported it bug-parted.
