After comparing the ubiquity syslog from this and the other bug Alex filed this is not a problem with the software but rather the storage device that it was being installed on. A lot of read errors, time outs:
Aug 15 19:31:10 ubuntu kernel: [ 3271.643434] journal commit I/O error
Aug 15 19:31:10 ubuntu kernel: [ 3271.823854] sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] Result: hostbyte=DID_BAD_TARGET driverbyte=DRIVER_OK
Aug 15 19:40:13 ubuntu kernel: [ 3815.339595] Read-error on swap-device (8:0:512)
is just a few of many disk errors occuring.

What could be done before attempting another install would to be "sudo
fsck -a /dev/sda1" to fix any errors on the disk. Normally I would use
the -r instead of -a but seems there are more than a few bad sectors.
