Same problem here. usb-creator-gtk wants root access (not available from
the menu) One it runs, it produces an unbootable usb stick belonging to
root.

USB Creator only working from CLI Ubuntu 11.10

Status in “usb-creator” package in Ubuntu:

Cannot seem to get USB Creator working directly from menu.

Have to use terminal via sudo usb-creator-gtk

Some occassions even this this has not been successful in producing
  bootable images

Used this tool for many years now since it first appeared but never
