You have made the plymouth alternative a symlink to itself.  This is an
invalid local configuration.

You need to fix /etc/alternatives/text.plymouth to be a symlink to
/lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-text/ubuntu-text.plymouth instead.  After
fixing this, you should be able to complete the upgrade, and you can
then use 'update-alternatives text.plymouth' to manage your theme
preferences.

Bug description:
  I just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.02, and now I cant configure, reinstall,
  or remove the plymouth themes. I also cant install my nvidia card.
  (nvidia-173) I have been searching the web for solutions, but have
  found nothing. I cannot adjust the resolution of my display, and I
  continuously receiv crash reports concerning plymouth themes
