Observation:
when i recreate a new partition table during the partitioning step in the installer, it works and fdisk -l looks like this:

Disk /dev/mmcblk0: 4035 MB, 4035969024 bytes
4 heads, 16 sectors/track, 123168 cylinders, total 7882752 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00087301

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/mmcblk0p1 * 2048 141311 69632 b W95 FAT32
/dev/mmcblk0p2 141312 7880703 3869696 83 Linux

it looks like the partition table that comes with the netinstall image
is broken.

Title:
pandaboard ES does not boot after using armhf netinstall

Status in “debian-installer” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
after walking through the netinstall for armhf, 1204, the pandaboard
ES does not boot. partitioning was done manually as written here:
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/OMAP

"does not boot" means: does not even fire up MLO/u-boot/.., e.g. no
  serial output at all.

the used version of the netinstall image was boot.img-fat.serial.

  /var/log/installer/syslog and /var/log/installer/partman are attached
