Not sure if this is helpful, but this seems very similar to #976509- a
graceful way to handle package dependency problems would resolve both.

Bug description:
This issue was previously reported in ticket 789898. The ticket was
closed as fixed, but the problem still exists and the information
required to solve the problem was not disclosed by the developer and
is not available elsewhere.
The Ubuntu alternate 11.10 i386 install crashes back to the installer
menu during the "select and install packages" phase. From the logs:
