Found the problem - I must have clicked DVD instead of desktop in the
usb creation tool by mistake.

Bug description:
  as title says, install goes fine until it tries to configure apt and
  then fails because i am using usb and not cd/dvd. I used the
  instructions and tools from the ubuntu website for creating the usb
  drive for installing.
