Original report updated with new information. This bug should probably
be moved away from "Plymouth", as it seems to affect areas outside of
booting too.
** Description changed:
This is a very strange one. Occasionally when I boot up my laptop (ASUS
N53), just after selecting my OS in GRUB, the screen will display
strange colors - almost like I've broken my LCD - and then displays a
black screen with a single purple vertical bar and doesn't continue to
LightDM. The only way to resolve it is by SysRq REISUB-ing.
The next time I boot it will *always* boot up perfectly. It's only every
5-10 boots that it does this. See the attached photo of the screen with
the aforementioned purple bar (I'll attach photos of the "crazier"
colors next time it happens).
+
+ UPDATE - As it turns out, this may not be a Plymouth bug at all. Another
+ case where this happens is if I leave my laptop for a long period (30
+ minutes or more) the screen will go blank. When I move the mouse or
+ press a key to "wake up" the screen, the same thing happens, forcing me
+ to perform a SysRq REISUB to reboot. In fact, I don't know where to file
+ this bug. But it is extremely irritating and show-stopping for Ubuntu,
+ so I feel it is a serious issue.
