You have been given bad advice. They meant "sudo dpkg --configure -a" or
"sudo apt-get -f install". But this is not a user support channel... so
I'm closing this bug report since it doesn't contain any useful bug.

Concerning the "dpkg-mainscript-helper: error: couldn't identify the
package" error message, it's a bug in debconf that's already reported.

** Changed in: dpkg (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Invalid

Title:
  Update Manager does not update-shows error

Status in “dpkg” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Update Manager did not update and showed error. I went to the Ubuntu Forums and posted my problem. It was suggested I run 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure -a' in the terminal. I ran and it shows this : 'dpkg-mainscript-helper: error: couldn't identify the package'.
  Need help to solve this as all my updates have been downloaded but not installed.

  Thank you.

  Regards

  Krishna
