11.04/11.10 uses grub2; reassigning.
Can you try editing the boot entry for the 3.0.0 kernel in your
grub.cfg, to set gfxpayload to 'text' instead of to the auto-detecting
'$linux_gfx_mode'?
** Package changed: grub (Ubuntu) => grub2 (Ubuntu)

Title:
latest versions of Ubuntu not working right 3.0.0.0 series
Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
win7 wubi amd64 11.04 install upgraded to Oneiric Ocelot. 11.10 beta 1/2 now.
When my Ubuntu starts, I have to press the "shift" key to get into the grub menu and choose one of the versions that is not 3.0.0.0 something like 3.0.0.18-20. If I choose one of the 3.0.0.0 ones it just get a purple blank screen indefinitely, even if I choose recovery mode, or let Ubuntu start on it's own. Nothing but purple blank screen. If I choose a 2.8 or 2.9 build it takes a few minutes, but does load.
