Title:
update-manager crashed with TypeError in confirmChanges():
glib.markup_escape_text() takes at most 1 argument (2 given)

Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This occurred after I tried running Update Manager, and I was asked to
do a partial upgrade. The first time it failed, giving these two error
  dialogs:

  "Can't guess meta-package

Your system does not contain a ubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-desktop, xubuntu-desktop or edubuntu-desktop package and it was not possible to detect which version of Ubuntu you are running.
Please install one of the packages above first using synaptic or apt-get before proceeding."

  "Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
The package 'ubuntu-desktop' is marked for removal but it is in the removal blacklist.

   This can be caused by:
   * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
   * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
   * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

This is most likely a transient problem, please try again later."

I tried following the advice of Question #141451, which was to first
run sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade. The only difference
I made from this was also adding the --assume-no option onto the
  second command.

Then I tried running Update Manager a second time, and agreed to let
it try a partial upgrade. It got as far as calculating changes, then
  it abruptly crashed.
