Hi Paul,

I kept trying that all night (sudo apt-get update & upgrade) but it didn't
fix the problem. I should mention that the GUI update manager stopped
working too although it was working when I did the upgrade from 11.04 to
11.10.

So currently the Terminal & Synaptic are the only ways of
installing/removing apps. Also I'd like to point out that I had to do 'sudo
synaptic' to be able to install/remove. Otherwise it will open in 'read
only' mode.

I'm currently at work and I'm going to try to 'sudo' software-center when I
get back home (don't know why I didn't try that last night!). I hope this
gets fixed in the official release of 11.10 but it seems that I'm the only
one facing the problem with the beta version so far.
