Apparently it wasn't the CD-ROM, nor the optical drive;

I had some compatible RAM lying around and replacing the original RAM
fixed the problem.

Bug description:
  system will boot to blinking dash; key strokes do nothing

  Please see attached file syslog. Only have the option to add 1
  attachment so partman is not included
