What exactly do you mean when you say "won't boot any further"?

Plymouth does not have anything to do with network configuration, it's
just the boot I/O multiplexer.  There may be *other* services on the
system that can't start until the network is available, but this is not
a bug in plymouth.

That doesn't seem to have anything to do with bringing up networking?
