This does not appear to be a kernel or kernel package bug. I did notice
several operapluginwrap segfaults in dmesg.

Bug description:
  This occurred while using the update manager. The manager suggested 10
  updates of which none where security updates. I pressed the "update"
  button and the update stalled on the linux-image-2.6.32-34-generic
  2.6.32-34.77 package informing me about a post-install error no. 17.
  What I noticed, is that probably the whole update was a kind of bug,
  because the manager was trying to update packages to their present
  versions (eg. the "old" and "new" version of Opera had exactly the
  same numbers (11.51 1087). So if My guess is correct, the update
  failed on the kernel package, as I had removed the previous (i.e.
  2.6.32-34.76) version after a successful update last week. A bit
  disappointing in an LTS release.
