This is a file corruption problem and not a bug in dpkg. Do "sudo apt-
get clean" and retry.

Unpacking vlc-data (from .../vlc-data_1.0.6-1ubuntu1.8_all.deb) ...
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/vlc-data_1.0.6-1ubuntu1.8_all.deb (--unpack):
 corrupted filesystem tarfile - corrupted package archive

** Changed in: dpkg (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Invalid
