david, thanks again for your report, and thanks for your persistence in
answering all those questions.

It looks like the "apt-get update" has fixed this problem for you.
However, it's probably also prevented us from seeing what was causing
the problem in the first place.

If you do (or anyone reading this does) experience the problem in future, please report a separate bug and attach these files: 
/var/log/dpkg.log
/var/log/apthistory.log
/var/log/syslog
