[Bug 854385] [NEW] garbled display on system shutdown/restart

Public bug reported:

The attached photo shows my HP Pavilion dv6000 notebook about to
restart.

Visible in the photo are lines of text whose cursor has not returned to
the left-hand side of the screen after newlines have been output, and
five graphical dots in the middle of the screen.

I assume that the shutdown screen should be similar in appearance to the
startup screen--that is, the five dots shown with a Ubuntu logo above
them.
