  Plymouth doesn't appear on startup

Status in “plymouth” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  I've applied the fix in bug 849954, but I'm still not getting a
  flicker-free boot. Visually, my boot sequence usually consists of the
  following:

  - Purple screen
  - Blank screen with a couple of visible mode-switches, and the cursor appearing occasionally
  - Login screen

  I sometimes see Plymouth during shutdown, and this sometimes consists
  of watching the 5 dots on top of a text console

  I've attached a fairly grainy video of my laptop booting, taken from
  my phone
