The blinking cursor is bug #850202 in grub, which has been fixed for the
upcoming oneiric release.

Not seeing the splash screen is always a possibility because the video
driver may not come on-line in the kernel until gdm is ready to display.
However, since you also say boot is slowing down, that may not be the
issue here. Please run 'apport-collect 782114' to gather the
information about your system that we would need for further analysis.

Title:
  no boot splash

Status in “plymouth” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: plymouth

when booting my Natty Narwhal non boot-splash appears
  after grub selection:
-for a couple of seconds appears a blinking cursor on the top left corner (big font)
-the screen goes off (black and with backlight off)
  -drum roll and gdm prompt

I'm using an Acer Aspire Timeline X 5820-tg and with Maverick everything was fine
I also think that the boot takes longer, but that's another story.

That's a big problem because when sometimes it hangs during boot, you
don't notice anything and keep waiting forever.
