Confirmed that the new grub2 sorts this out.  Closing out the kernel
task.

Bug description:
  When booting you see the grub purple, then a black screen with cursor,
  then a mode switch, then plymouth splash.  We do not expect to see the
  black screen with cursor.  This is either a kernel issue, or something
  before plymouth starts.
