This bug is a duplicate of #662793, and a load of others.
It's obviously not unique to 11.10
The work-around did not work on my system
(
Try this workaround: Open a terminal and enter the command:
sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
and try the upgrade again.
)
