Title:
on nvidia system without advanced drivers, cryptsetup is not rendered

Status in “plymouth” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: plymouth

On a freshly installed Ubuntu using LUKS encryption,
cryptsetup/plymouth appears to attempt graphical boot, fails due to
lack of KMS and requires me to type in my passphrase blindly, without
any indication that I am required to do so. The OS's behavior is
indistinguishable from a crash during booting (no output, no input
  feedback except for HDD activity).

As soon as I install the nvidia driver (didn't try with noveau),
plymouth uses text mode and renders a passphrase prompt, feedback etc.

On my old upgraded system (bug caused me to reinstall), which used
uvesafb/v86d+nvidia driver to boot graphically, the issue was present
  during all boots.

plymouth/cryptsetup should fall back to text rendering (or anything
that notifies me that I should input my passphrase) in these cases
without system modifications that would require a successful boot.
