I have tried update-manager with the ayatana scrollbars (removed u-m from the blacklist) and it worked, the main ui works with the new scrollbar, however, when checking for updates/installing updates it can not connect to aptdaemon/can not start aptdaemon (the process doing the updates and displaying the dialogs), so I assume it's blacklisted until someone has time to further investigate why aptdaemon can not start.
