Do you recall if the device specifically unmounted before removing it?
Btrfs doesn't handle devices going missing very well yet.

The output of alt-sysrq-w during a hang would be useful.

Bug description:
  After mounting a pendrive with btrfs on it, Ubuntu hangs on shutdown
  even if the drive has been previously removed. The behavior can be
  observed in Ubuntu 10.10 as well as in 10.04.
